Joyce started writing Exiles while living in Trieste in 1914 and completed it in Zurich in 1915. One of the interesting things about the writing of Exiles is that Joyce produced a series of notes during the composition of the play that give us some insight into the autobiographical elements behind the work, particularly relating to Nora Barnacle’s life in Galway, and also give us some insight into the composition of the play. Exiles was first published by Grant Richards in 1918.
