After the house at 7 Eccles Street had been partially demolished in the 1960s, the knocker was removed from the door by an American visitor called Fred Seiden in 1966. When Fred visited no 7 he felt The front door was removed from the house and brought to the Bailey pub on Duke Street where it was declared officially ‘closed’ by the poet Patrick Kavanagh on Bloomsday, 16 June 1966. The knocker that had replaced the lost original disappeared from the door while it was in the pub, and the present knocker was substituted. In 2013 the original knocker was returned to the Joyce Centre.
