Sergeant Thomas Charles Tucker, known as Charles, was a quiet man, nicknamed ‘Daddy’ by other members of the Force. He had a particular interest in stopping crimes against children. It was very unfortunate that he found himself at the scene of the Houndsditch Murders. He was entitled to retire on a pension, but had stayed on temporarily to help with staff demand for the forthcoming coronation of George V. Furthermore, that evening, he should have been based at Bishopsgate Station, but was called to the crime scene so another colleague could complete the divisional pay sheet. Sergeant Tucker was a very religious man who also worked as a churchwarden at his local church, and after his death the parishioners raised funds for a memorial plaque. He is buried in the City Cemetery at Ilford.
