Kate was slim, around five feet tall, and had auburn hair, hazel eyes, and a loud and lively personality. Her sister described her as a ‘regular jolly sort’, while her landlord at Conway’s said she was always singing and got on well with the others in the lodging house. Friends used words such as intelligent, scholarly and fiery for Kate. While those close to her said that she wasn’t a prostitute, what we do know is that she was very poor, and she may have turned to a variety of means to make money, including cleaning and labouring.
