Kate returned to London with John Kelly two days before she died, having been hop-picking in Kent. In the late 19th century a lot of people from London would find work in this way. By the time they got back, they had once again run out of money.  After managing to find some work the next day, they met on Saturday, the day of her death, to work out where their next meal would come from. Kate decided she would go and see her daughter Annie to ask to borrow money, probably something she had done many times before. John Kelly was concerned about Kate being out because of the murders and had asked her to return early. She didn’t see her daughter but did somehow find enough money to get drunk and be arrested at 8.30pm that evening, about four hours after she had promised John she would be home.
