Fan PleatingAt regular fan making workshops held here at The Fan Museum we teach the pleating method first used in the Far East and thereafter in the West. Once the proportions of the fan are determined, two corresponding pieces of card are folded concertina style, the number of folds corresponding with the number of sticks. The fan leaf, paper in most instances, is then placed between the two flattened pieces of cardboard like the meat in a sandwich and the folds gathered up tightly. When the leaf is removed, it may be trimmed top and bottom and then matched to a set a sticks.
