Why are the works thought to have been made in Tyrol? There are several indications for this. First there is the wood of the panels. This is pine. Pine was the common sort of wood mediaeval panels in the Alpine countries were made of. So this considerably limits the area we have to try and find the painter in. Christ in Mary’s belly is a typical representation in Southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Tyrol. The very realistic depiction of the scenery and the animals and plants in it, seems to have been influenced by traditions common of Northern Italy. All this feeds the assumption that these panels were made in or near Merano and Trente in South Tyrol.
