The painting is not dated, but we know that it was painted after 1537. We know this from the dragon above Amor, which Cranach used to sign his works. In his early works the dragon has erect wings. After 1537 the dragon’s wings are down. The dragon was the Cranach family’s coat of arms. He received the coat of arms in 1508 from Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, also known as Frederick the Wise, who employed Cranach as court painter.
