Lucas Cranach the Elder was a versatile man: he was not only a painter, engraver and etcher but also an apothecary, a paper dealer and printer. He was acquainted with Martin Luther. He painted many portraits of the reformer and also printed the first three thousand copies of his German translation of the New Testament in 1522. Lucas had two sons, who both became painters: Hans Cranach and Lucas Cranach the Younger.
