The day after Van Gogh started painting ‘Terrace of a Cafe at Night’ he writes to his sister Wil that he thoroughly enjoys painting on-site at night. ‘Terrace of a Cafe at Night’ is Van Goghs first painting with a starry sky in the background. He has now acquired a taste for it. Twelve days later he paints – again by the light of a gas lamp – his first real starry sky, the equally famous painting ‘Starry Night over the Rhone’.
