In 1882 Van Gogh was living in The Hague. He rented a studio there and attended lessons with Anton Mauve, who had taught him the rudiments of the watercolour and oil painting techniques the year before. In this year Van Gogh made his first studies in oils and also received his first commission. His uncle, Cornelis van Gogh, asked him to draw twelve views of The Hague.
