Three geometrical nude figures stand in a mechanised landscape: one on the left, one slightly lower down and one on the far right. The rhythmic combination of forms creates dynamism and movement. The work also contains several references to Greek culture such as the Doric column and the temple pediments. About this painting Léger wrote: ‘I wanted progress painting in volumes as far as possible. I saw ‘Nude Figures in a Wood’ as a battle of volumes. I believed that I didn’t need to add colour. I had enough in the volumes.’
