Picasso was the founder of Cubism together with Georges Braque. Central to this movement was an unconventional manner of looking, independent of material reality. The artists wanted to create a new reality by simplifying forms and combining them in novel ways. Strictly speaking ‘Guitar’ is an example of Synthetic Cubism. In this variant of Cubism, the characteristic forms of an object – in this case a guitar – are placed on the canvas as a collage and sometimes combined with other materials, such as the sand around the sound box in this painting. In this way Picasso managed to eliminate perspective and create a new sense of space.
