Between 1913 and 1920 Helene Kröller-Müller bought nine paintings by Mondrian. She saw in the works a struggle to purify, objectify and abstract reality. She hoped that people would one day recognise the value of Mondrian’s work for the development of the visual arts. But after 1920, when Mondrian began to paint completely abstract paintings, she purchased no more of his works.
