De Stijl was characterised by absolute abstraction and an extremely sober use of visual means. The artists used only the primary colours – red, yellow and blue – in combination with black, white and grey. Although Van der Leck was one of the founders of De Stijl, he did not remain in the group for long. He went his own way following a disagreement about the role of reality. About this he later said: β€˜For me, painting has always been the representation of everyday life; I never had much interest in so-called abstraction.’
