Little Owl’ is an assemblage of found objects: an earthenware vessel, the lid of a tin can, nails, screws, nuts and bolts. He combined all these materials with plaster. Picasso made the sculpture in Vallauris, a village in the South of France known for its pottery, where he settled with his mistress Françoise Gilot in 1948. Together they regularly scoured the local rubbish dump. Photographs of Picasso’s studio from that period bear witness to the wealth of objects he found there.
