Lee Miller’s photos of Barney Kiernan’s Bar are considered particularly notable as before they were found it was thought that no photo had ever been taken of its interior. Lee wrote: “On the back streets behind the Four Courts are a lot of pubs, written about and occupied by Joyce. The One he cherished most was Barney Kiernan’s which has now changed name and proprietors but otherwise is just the same. The neighbourhood is incredibly shabby now, but once, perhaps even in Joyce’s time, the houses were lovely. Mr Bolger, the present proprietor, is behind the bar… Everything in the place is a souvenir of some kind or other… The clock etc. They have a poker in the grate with a double ess bend which murdered someone.”
