The term ‘Impressionism’ was coined by a critic, Louis Leroy, and was not intended to be flattering. In 1874, the same year Monet paints his studio-boat, he participates in an exhibition with like-minded artists. Due to the new painting style and the everyday subject matter their works cause quite a stir. Monet exhibits his now world-famous painting ‘Impression, Sunrise’. Louis Leroy is of the opinion that the young painters – as is the case with this painting – want to get away with nothing more than a quick ‘impression’ and that is why he calls them impressionists. The artists took it on as an honorary nickname.
