Monet is seen as the ‘father’ of Impressionism. The artists of this movement wanted to capture fleeting impressions on their canvases. The subject matter is not all that relevant. They are preoccupied with effects of light and colour, the movements in the air and the water. Typical is also the use of paint in loose and quick brush strokes. That is apparent in this painting. The forms are not clearly outlined. All attention is drawn to the shades of colour, the rippled reflection of the trees in the water, the cloudy sky and the boat on the river.
