From 1871 until 1879 Monet lives in Argenteuil, a village near Paris on the Seine River. It is there that he commissions a boat he can use as a studio, enabling him to capture the effect of light on the water and surrounding area. By using his boat as a motif, he records the artistic creed and working method he remains faithful to for the rest of his life.
