Odilon Redon belongs to the same generation as the Impressionists, but unlike them, he uses imagination for his inspiration. He sees the reproduction of a visible reality as a limiting factor in art. Or in his own words: ‘What have I put in my works to suggest so many subtleties? I have put in them a little door opening onto a mystery. I have created fiction.’
