Helene Kröller-Müller was introduced to Floris Verster by her advisor H.P. Bremmer who, like many of his contemporaries, was deeply impressed by Verster’s work. Bremmer considered him the ‘greatest colourist of the nineteenth century’. He said of Verster’s use of red: ‘that is no simple red, the painter worked on it until it became blood red with a hint of purple.’ In addition to this portrait, Helene acquired twenty other works by Verster for her collection.
