Floris Verster was a trend-setting artist in the Netherlands around 1900. With his loose brushstrokes and exuberant use of colour, he made an important contribution to the development of Dutch Symbolism. Verster did not want to copy reality, but to represent his personal idea of reality. For example, he painted a winter scene with pink snow. He was most admired for his flower still lifes with splashes of colour and an unmistakable suggestion of mystery and decay.
