The woman modelling for ‘Recumbent Nude’ probably is Agostina Segatori, the owner of Café du Tambourin on the Boulevard du Clichy. Van Gogh frequently eats at this café and pays for his meals in still lifes of flowers, which are hung on the walls. It is the first time his paintings can be seen by a wide audience. Agostina is probably Van Gogh’s mistress for a short period of time. This fact is not entirely certain, but from some of Vincent’s letters it can be deduced that she is more than ‘just’ a friend.
