In March 1886, Van Gogh leaves for Paris, the hub of European art at that time. He lives with his brother Theo at 54 Rue Lepic in Montmartre. In Paris he is introduced to the art of his contemporaries and gets into contact with such artists as Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Emile Bernard. He experiments with colour and a looser brushstroke. ‘Recumbent Nude’ is one of the first paintings Van Gogh did in Paris. The clear and bright colours are in sharp contrast with the ‘dark’ works like ‘The Potato eaters’ he made in the Netherlands.
